As part of your support contract, we will constantly monitor your systems. By using various technologies we know as soon as there is a problem, and we are often acting upon it before you are even aware yourself.
We employ 2 fundamental technologies;
Heartbeat Monitoring
"Servers-UP" External Monitoring
Often these are both employed together as a complete failsafe, so even if one of our monitoring systems fails we still get notifications.
So how do these two monitoring systems work, and why would we want two?
The heartbeat system works by running an application on the system being monitored itself, so in order for us to receive a heartbeat the host system has to be running and it’s internet connection has to be working too. This proves a lot about the state of the machine being monitored in one simple process, because as soon as the machine freezes, or the internet connection is lost a heartbeat will fail to be sent, and the alert process begins.
The external monitoring system works in a different manner in that it tests a server’s ability to respond from an external request. At its simplest level it could be a ping which checks the machine is available on the internet. This test is only very basic and so other tests can be configured to check, for example that the server can serve a web page, or that specific TCP services are open.
If one or more of these checks fail, notifications are sent out by our alert system. Alerts are sent directly to our engineers via email and text message. If required we can include your own email addresses and mobile numbers for the fail notifications.
You will have access to instant real-time checking which can be done via your Servers-Up monitoring control panel. Servers-Up allows you to disable checks if for example you are intentionally working on a machine and it will be disconnected.
